“Future”

“Chaos”

“2322, September 16, New York, the UN officials signed a peace agreement. A year later they signed a document on nuclear weapon. There is no nuclear danger…”

“What are you busy with, Ann?”
“Preparing lessons, mom.”
“Your dad might be hungry. Would you take this lunch for him?”
“Can’t you send it by a sender machine?”
“You better go there yourself… and it will be a good chance to see dad’s office.”
“Then give me fuel and I will go.”
“Be careful, don’t drive yourself, and switch on the automatic control.”

“…there is no nuclear danger. Scientific and technical giants are flooding our reality…2345, European spacemen landed on… before the American crew… ”

“Stop reading Ann. You have landed already.”
“Is it you dad?”
“It’s me. You’re reading too much, you better meet you friends instead. ”
“Who to meet? My only best friend has left for Italy.”
“I don’t know, think of something. Well, come on… Be careful not to step on this new ant species. My last invention!! If I am successful in my experiments and accounts, 80% percent of our land will be covered with green thanks to these insects. ”
“And why do we need this green? Look around you. All the houses are built in forests, the atmosphere is clean. Who could think this might be real some day? Some centuries ago they would have taken us for insane if we had told about green paradise of the future.”

I am back home again. At last I can sit down to my books... Where had I stopped…? “…European spacemen landed on the planet Mars before the American crew. The American Space Agency proved right: there has never been life on this planet, there is none now and no signs of life can be traced for the future. Despite this fact, the American reputation is far from being the best. ”

“The phone, Ann…”
“Who’s calling?”
“Your friend from Turkey.”
“Eff, it’s you, hey.”
“I am back and I am waiting for you.”
“I am busy, very busy at the moment. Can’t come right now. ”
“Come when you want. I’ll be waiting.”

“…Latin America, Africa, United Europe, Southern Asia and South-Western Asia became stronger than ever, our country being the leader. People chose a peaceful lifestyle… ”

“…and you will visit your friend in the neighboring country to prove this lifestyle.”
“You are right this time, mom. Our generation has the responsibility to improve this world and make it better, and we have to start right now.”

“Rose”

I hadn’t seen Egypt for ages, that’s why I decided to spend my holidays there.

I’m already in Egypt. I can’t believe my eyes.
Near the pyramids, instead of desert here are huge flowers, which remind me roses.

I asked my Egyptian friend.
“Where are these flowers from?”
“Two years ago huge seeds from Mars fell on the Earth; we thought it was an asteroid.
But then we understood that those were seeds. We water them once a year.”
“Interesting.”
I went to the flowers. They didn’t smell. They were huge.
Few hours later I sat on the stem and began to draw the flowers.
“Oh, be careful”, -said the voice.
I looked around, but there wasn’t anyone there.
“Who said that?” I asked.
“The one you’re sitting on.”
“The flower?”
“Who else?”
“I have never heard a talking flower before.”
“I’m not like other flowers.”
“I know. What’s your name?”
“I’ve got no name. But what kind of name would match me?”
“Rose”
“What’s a rose?”
“Rose is a beautiful flower, but it has disappeared.”
“It’s so sad. But I like the name... Rose. What was it like, can you draw it?”
I closed my eyes for a moment, to remember what it was like. When I finished, Rose said.
“Was it big?”
“No, but it had a nice smell.”
Rose bowed her head and said.
“Am I nice?”
“Oh, of course you are, but...”
“But what?”
“Those roses were better, but we didn’t understand it till we lost them.”
And both of us got silent, because we didn’t know what to talk about.
“Where am I?”
“You are in Egypt.”
“Can you tell me about it?”
And I began to tell about Egypt, changing some legends, because I didn’t know them.
When I finished, Rose looked around in surprise.
“This is such an interesting place...”
So I spent all my holidays with Rose. When I had to come back, I took Rose with me.
Rose was happy, that we would be together.
Now she is in my garden.
“Where am I now?” asked Rose.
“You are in Armenia.”
“You told me, didn’t you?”
“Yes.”
“I’m cold. It’s cold here.”
‘Well, this is not Egypt.”
I brought a warm scarf for the Rose and saw that some petals were missing. First I didn’t pay any attention to that but then I noticed Rose wasn’t talking to me at all.
Her petals were falling more and more, day by day.
One day I said to Rose.
“I must go.”
“Where to?”
“To London, I have a lot of work to do.”
“When will you come back?”
“Tomorrow. My friends will look after you.”
“Thanks, I don’t need that.”
“OK.” I said closing the door.
I came back the next day. When I opened the door, I saw my Rose fallen on the ground, all of her petals spread around her except one. I ran up to her.
“What’s wrong with you?”
“I’m cold, I’m weak.”
“We will heal you.”
“No, you can’t.” said Rose in despair.
“Don’t say that!”
“You-people are amazing creatures, you kill the one you love, then you weep.”
“Forgive me.” I said.
“You are my friend; of course I’ll forgive you.”
It was her last word. Her last petal fell down and I lost my friend.

“Future”

“Future! Hey, Future! What's going on on this street? Where is this noise coming from?”

I don’t like it when people make noise. I prefer silence. That is the reason why I have chosen this very house, which is right at the crossing of SILENCE and CALMNESS streets. Nearly nothing happens here. The houses are noise protected. Everything is noise protected in this quarter, even trees and parks. I have always dreamt of a place like this. Now things have changed.

“Future! Hey, Future!”
Future is approaching me at a slow pace. It is my friend, my robot, my assistant.
“What happened, Future?”
“Don’t worry…although it's really strange. Grass and a flower called a violet have grown in one of the gardens near here. People are hurrying to see the marvel. So, that is why it is very noisy.”
“What you're saying doesn’t make any sense at all. Grass, flowers, soil… they disappeared hundreds of years ago. We only learn about these things from textbooks.”
Soon my friend’s excited face appeared on the computer screen.
“Have you heard already?”
“I have…”
“You live near the place where these things are happening. You can send Future to fetch the grass, the flower and the soil. People from the institute will surely come to destroy these things. We must hurry. ..You'll be able to protect them in your house.”
“Suppose, Future went there. How can it steal the grass, flower and soil? How can it escape so many people? … We’ll see… ”
I sat nervously in the armchair.
“What do you think, Future?”
“I will try.”
Future went out. I approached the window and saw people walking back…maybe the plant extinguisher brigade had already arrived. I was impatient waiting for Future to come back. I was so worried they would catch him. It was better not think about him at all….They'd make me pay taxes for breaking the law and what's worse they'll take Future, MY Future, to the extermination institute.
“Come on, where are you Future, my dear friend?”
I could see Future’s face. He was asking for help. Maybe he had run out of batteries…poor Future… What can be done? My friend is in need… I can’t call Robot Repairs Booth… I will help you, just wait a bit. I am coming.
I went downstairs, took Future in my hands and hurried on since I could hear the voices of exterminators approaching.
“Great, you did it! Now, wait a bit…wait dear. I will change your batteries…”
Future’s eyes sparkled; he held the flower, grass and a handful of soil in his iron palm.
In a minute we were back at home. I sat delighted and happy in my armchair and stared at the violet and the green grass. It's so great that we could save this MARVEL.
Tomorrow people will be discussing the strange disappearance.
“This victory needs a mention. What do you think Future?”

“Chaos”

I don’t know if I can change anything in my future. To tell you the truth, future scares me. People are encoded, nearly all have numbers now. Maybe tomorrow nothing will be left without a code or a number. Imagine, foot number 16665 is walking, or nose number 6665 is breathing air.
Anyone would know where everything is. This is sad, since we would not be able to play hide and seek; we would know who is where.
It is very difficult to picture future or try to live as if in future. To my mind, even children’s games would change. People would probably invent encoding equipment and what is worse -this device would be made by an eight year old boy during a game. This will be the beginning of chaos.
Remember, I was talking about anyone knowing the place of everyone and everything? Imagine a policeman looking for a thief. It is pretty good, if he knows where the bandit is but the latter knows where the policeman is and this is not good at all.
Now think of a lion chasing a deer or a hare. POOR lion, it would be starving and would die of hunger one day. It would know where hare number 283 and deer number 587 are, but the latter would never meet this lion, since they would know where it is, too.
Can you imagine what chaos there would be? Things would be different and that is the reason I am afraid of future.

“The air and water, without fire and earth”

I was waiting while Nem was breathing. He was breathing deeply for three minutes, as he would die soon. After a while he began to breathe normally and smiled.
"Your air is so sweet. It's just like the air that the teacher of Astronomy gave us".
I remembered that the air the teacher had given us was of the second level, like the air of restaurants.
"You should come to us more often. We bring here fresh water every month. Do you know how sweet it is? That's underground water. They say, that you can find water if you dig for a long time. That's why it's so expensive. But my father always buys fresh water and air".
Nem looked at the dark barrels, which were moving with a nice sound, when the helicopters of army's food were flying by.
"It's so nice here", said Nem. "Our air isn't very good; it's of the forth level. My dad can't buy water of a better quality; he says he will buy it later, when my elder brother works with him on Mars".
We kept silence for a while. There wasn't anything to talk about. It was boring a little. We had already spoken about Sey’s Grandpa and what he had told us about blue water, which he used to drink when he was young.
"He is mad, isn't he?” I asked. "Sey's grandpa says that water was blue".
"Maybe he is, but I'd like to try blue water. Perhaps it's very sweet."
Well, then there wasn't anything to speak about. We had also talked about all sorts of water and how they tasted.
"Will you come to school tomorrow?", I asked.
"Perhaps I will", Nem answered. "I will breathe a little there. Otherwise our air will be over soon, and we haven't bought water for ten months. Our neighbor gives us some water, when my brother and I clean his spaceship."
Nem stayed for a while. He said that he would wait until the army's helicopter would fly by. And he was breathing while he was waiting, very fast, as if he would die soon…

The next day it was announced in school, that students, who couldn't pay for their air, couldn't come to school any more.
I was amazed very much, though I had been expecting the news for a long time. After classes Nem went away so soon, that I couldn't even speak to him. But what could I say? I wanted to say, that my father could pay instead of him, and that we could give them water. But I was so ashamed to say those things that I didn't even go after him. I knew Nem's character. He would never let us pay instead of him.

It was so boring at home. Dad came back from his workplace soon that day, but I didn't come out of my room. I was very thirsty, but I was trying not to drink.
…I was woken up by a voice which was coming from downstairs. I heard dad's voice, saying:
"Yes, yes, I was waiting for you".
I went down very fast.
There were three strangers standing in the middle of the room. But I could recognize them by things they were holding in their hands.
"Is this all air you have asked?", one of them asked my father.
"Yes, yes, everything is all right", my father told them and watched them doing their job.
Then airsellers went away.
"But we have enough water, nearly for three months", I was amazed. "We don't need this".
"Well, I'd like to have no problems with air", my father answered and opened one of the air barrels.
I looked at all our air with disgust. I'd like to give half of it to Nem’s family, because they shouldn't breathe the air of the fourth level, it's poisonous! And what about our water? It was of the best quality. We didn't need to work on Mars, where many people die every day. We didn't need anything.
"Can I call Nem", I asked.
My father, who was done with air barrels, looked at me.
"Of course, you can".
But Nem did not come. He said that he was going to clean his neighbor's spaceship. I wished that he came and breathed some fresh air.
But Nem would not come. He just hadn't.
When I went to Nem's house, I saw him standing outside with an airmask. I had an airmask, too.
"What has happened?", I asked. We could speak easily in airmasks.
Nem was watching the ground very carefully. The ground was covered with black spots. They were from the last war.
"Why are you outside?" I asked once more.
"You know", said Nem, I noticed, that he was holding a long iron stick in his hand. "I want to work, too. I want to find water and to sell it. Then we will have water and money for air".
"What water, where?"
Nem didn't answer, but hit the ground with his stick very harshly. I didn't understand what he was doing, because the ground was very hard, he couldn't break it even in two years.
"They say underground water is very expensive", Nem continued, but his voice was shaking. "It's so bad my father has no spaceship, he could bring water from Mars. I will bring water from other planets some day".
I didn't even try to stop him, because I knew that was the way he was holding his tears.
"Nem, let's go home, I'll give you some air and water".
"No, everything is all right", Nem said. "My father has bought fresh air and water, so, everything is fine, really, it's all-right".
I didn't say anything, just turned around and ran home.
"Dad, hurry up, take some air and water and let's go to Nem's house".
It was a little difficult to do all those things, because my father had to order all that.
That's why it was very late in the evening, when we went. Their neighbor said that Nem's air and water was over, and their father hadn't been back from Mars for many months.

Now I'm trying not to breathe very much, because Nem needs some air, too. Because he can come every moment, "to breath a little", and when he finishes it, we will talk about blue water, which is very sweet. And maybe Sey's Grandpa isn't mad at all…

“There are more flying cars in the sky than ever, mom.”
“I have been watching out of the window today…I saw them too.”
“How could you, mom? Didn’t you think other people might be spying you? ”

There is a ban on looking out of the window. They have established this prohibition since long ago.
“I know about possible spies, dear, but it was so noisy inside! I thought it would be silent outside… It’s unbearable…
“I heard people talk about a sky accident. They say three airplanes had smashed into a large flying object.”
As a result of this, the trees in the park were ruined… the park is gone now.
“We have a problem with the computer.”
“How could it happen? What a pity! The computer is the only means of learning about things happening outside and now… ”
“Don’t be too worried darling. Now I will try to open the window once again. Who knows…?I did it once; I don’t think I will have problems in opening the window for the second time. …or …maybe I will try to open it tomorrow…”
The day was lingering… Every one in the house was bored with watching films about iron men…
In the morning we woke up of the breeze playing in our nostrils. Children were so happy to breathe fresh air…but…in some hours the flying objects would fill the sky with poisonous particles and we would have to close the windows again.

The computer started working in some days.
Every morning we could feel fresh air coming out of the open windows.
